RIMScast

Jan 18, 2022

Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, the month dedicated to raising awareness about human trafficking, educating the public on how to identify and prevent this crime, and celebrating the efforts of organizations, governments, law enforcement, and advocates that are making an effort to raise awareness.

In this episode, Justin Smulison is joined by author and human trafficking expert, Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco, to shine a light on this global problem and share her insights on what risk professionals can do to identify and help victims of trafficking.

Dr. Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco is an accomplished survey methodologist, research scientist, and quantitative and qualitative consultant on issues related to human trafficking. She is also the CEO of Break the Chain, the Executive Director of Freedom Light, and the author of Hidden in Plain Sight: America's Slaves of the New Millennium, and was recently a guest speaker at RIMS Live 2021!

Kimberly shares how risk professionals can ensure their organizations know how to train their employees to spot the signs and properly report human trafficking, how the current remote-fueled world impacts modern slavery, the industries that are the highest risk for trafficking, and her insights on what we can all do to address this issue as a collective.

Tweetables (For Social Media Use):

“The reality is, the average person is thinking of trafficking like something out of the movie, Taken, where you have a clearly innocent victim and these gun-wielding mobsters. … In reality, trafficking is really [not that clear].” — Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco

“I really think that … instead of pointing fingers and putting the blame on various parties, it’s a collaborative effort. We actually do need to learn a lot more on how to … combat this issue [of human trafficking].” Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco

“I want to help organizations and businesses protect victims of trafficking and prevent these crimes from happening … and facilitate the prosecution of offenders. Those are the goals of the TVPRA [Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act].” — Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco

“It’s really important to continually educate, evaluate, [and ask], ‘Are my employees retaining this information?’ … When you do see something, and … report it to law enforcement, keep a log of the efforts … to ensure that … your premises are safe.” — Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco
