RIMScast

Mar 15, 2022

Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.

Today, Justin is once again joined by Henk Ovink to discuss all things water-related! Henk is the Special Envoy for International Water Affairs for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Sherpa to the UN/WB High-Level Panel on Water, and is the world’s only water ambassador!

In this episode, Henk discusses the risks and opportunities of Groundwater in anticipation of this year’s World Water Day, a global event held annually on March 22nd. He explains the importance of groundwater, how it factors into the global practice of risk management, and what risk professionals can do to factor it in. He also shares the purification methods that have emerged during the pandemic, how current world events might disrupt international water safety efforts, and what risk professionals and organizational leaders can do to take their involvement with water risk management to the next level.

Tweetables (For Social Media Use):

“The pandemic, in a sense, reminded us that we have to become … more aligned with nature. We have to deal with these challenges in a more comprehensive … collaborative [way].” — Henk Ovink

“Water [is] a resource that we can reuse and recycle in many ways. Right now, too often water is taken for granted by industry, agriculture, and our society. But … if we reuse it and reclean it, we can use it again and again … and … our water footprint goes down.” — Henk Ovink

“And that is what I find so amazing about water; it’s powerful and it can destroy and destruct – so you better be careful. You have to treat it well. … But if you use it well … understand its complexities … and you start to value it, it manages itself.” — Henk Ovink

“Water is not the only way to look at the world but water is a way to look at the world for sustainable development and climate action that presents us with a just, inclusive, and comprehensive alternative. It really helps us build resiliency … for a better future.” — Henk Ovink
